Kenics Heat Exchangers

Kenics heat exchangers place static mixer elements inside each heat exchanger tube, continuously pushing process fluid from the tube center to the wall and back to disrupt the laminar film buildup that limits heat transfer in conventional empty-tube designs. The manufacturer reports transfer rates three to seven times greater than empty tubes, letting a Kenics unit do the same job in a smaller footprint.

Features & Benefits

  • Elements can be furnace-brazed to the tube wall for an internal fin effect and maximum transfer rate, or supplied removable for applications needing periodic cleaning during product changeovers
  • Self-cleaning wiping action from the elements minimizes fouling and reduces thermal degradation risk
  • Plug-flow characteristics produce a uniform heat history and blend out temperature gradients
  • Can cool viscous materials to near freezing without plugging the tubes, per the manufacturer, generating transfer coefficients comparable to scraped-surface units without moving parts
  • Custom built to ASME and TEMA codes; design pressures to 10,000 psi; construction available in all metals and alloys
  • X-ray, hydro, dye penetrant, and halogen testing available for ASME/TEMA compliance
  • Range spans single jacketed units to large multi-tube designs exceeding 3,000 individual tubes

Applications

Manufacturer cites use in polymers (styrenics, ethylenes, polyesters, nylons, silicones, adhesives/sealants, devolatilization), plastics (extruded foam), foods (chocolates, dairy products, salad dressing, sugar and corn syrups), energy (coal-oil mixtures, power alcohol, petrochemicals, fuel oil), pulp & paper (black liquor, tall oils, kraft soaps), and miscellaneous uses including asphalts, slurries, agri-chemicals, rubber sealants, paint, and waste treatment

Performance

  • Heat transfer rates 3-7 times greater than empty tubes, per the manufacturer
  • Example comparison cited by the manufacturer: cooling 5,000 lbs/hr of a viscous polymer required an 18 in. shell diameter and 30 in. tube length versus 29 in. and 192 in. for an equivalent empty-tube exchanger, with the transfer coefficient rising from 3 to 30 BTU/ft-hr-°F
  • Design pressures to 10,000 psi

About The Manufacturer
