Direct Steam Injection Improves Paper Machine Performance

Direct Steam Injection Improves Paper Machine Performance

A Geiger Pump & Equipment Partner Organization recently worked with a longstanding specialty paper mill in the Midwest to help improve their process for heating whitewater and fresh water tanks. The mill ultimately wanted to achieve more precise temperature control, reduced maintenance and an overall increase in efficiency.

The Challenge

Frequent paper grade changes combined with a slow to respond in-tank sparging system resulted in delays beyond the 2 hours allotted to get the water up to temp. This delay, in turn, resulted in running the paper machine cold at startup, off-spec paper, decreased production and ultimately greater maintenance requirements.

The Solution

The mill needed to find a better way to heat their 25,000-gallon fresh water tank by 90°within 2 hours. After evaluating several heating options, the Hydro-Thermal Solaris® S206 in-line heater was selected. The Solaris could be easily installed within the existing system and its direct steam injection technology allows the water to be heated directly within the process line while achieving precise temperature control.

The Results

After installing the Solaris, the mill reported 20% hotter water on startup and total time to the target 135°temperature took less than 2 hours. Overall these changes increased the mill's production and eliminated extensive system maintenance.
